A book I found very interesting was, "Who Wrote The Bible" by Richard Freidman
Very recomendable indeed. I also recomend "On being a Christian", by the liberal catholic theologian Hans Kunsch (a european best-seller for two decades, completely ignored by the american public).

I agree with you E-man. The Bible is the product, not the cause, of Judeo-Christian thaught. Had Protestants got the point, Christianity wouldn't be as pathetically divided as it is in so many sects.

I have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes I wish I'd had a more normal childhood (I was "born in the truth"). But on the other hand, having been in a cult and having left, taught me to think more skeptically and to be more rigorous in my thoughts, specially about religion.
Now, those who leave the WT but go on as braindead as before, joining fundamentalist protestant churches, ... well, I think they get what they deserve.

Actually, twisting scriptures to make a point is what no one today appreciates. It's incredible that most Americans are still trying to make sense of the Bible. Outside the US people have realized for a long time that (A) the Bible contradicts itself so many times that you can prove anything you want by picking out the right texts and (B) the world today is so different from what it was 2000 years ago that it makes little sense to transplant organizational procedures from first century Christianity.

first i would like to say i'm not judging any in what i'm about to say as we all are at different places in our lives and i respect that.. here it is: at what point in your life did you no longer believe in god or believe the bible?.
how many came to this conclution after coming to this db?.
My reason for asking is i'm bothered that if my family ever leave the borg.....will they too not believe anymore?
If your family ever leave the borg, one of two things will happen: either they will start using their brains or they will go on as brainded as before. All ex-JW who have turned into fundamentalist christians are in the second category. In the first category I know many atheists, agnostics, deists (like me) and christians, many of whom have never been JW. So I think this board has no bearance on that. And I also think that people move from one category to another many times in their lives (I've switched from deism to agnosticism and back many times, and some days I even lean towards atheism).
In any case, whatever happens will be their decision, not yours. When you set a bird free, it is the bird that choses where it will fly.

I think you're wrong. Those who really care about you have not stopped loving you, they just can't associate with you because they have been coerced to think that shunning is the right thing to do. Then there are the others, of course, who never gave a shit about you but just had to pretend while you were in "the Truth".
My personal experience is that, even though I was also raised in "the Truth", when I started attending college I got to know many people who cared about me regardless of my religion or anything, and that made me feel that true friendship is easier to find outside Watchtowerdom. That feeling eventually led me out of "the Truth", but that's another tale for another day.
Now I'm really curious about one thing: why the heck did you take up smoking? In my teenage years I had to struggle against sexual urges but the idea of smoking never crossed my mind. I took up smoking just 3 months ago here in Switzerland, where everybody smokes nice cigars and stuff (not that I will smoke cheap cigarettes, either).

hi rev b: you stated on my other thread that belief in the trinity is necessary for salvation in christendom.
not so.. i can go into almost any church and say that i am christian, believe in jesus christ as my personal savior, and will be accepted as such, without any comment or need to discuss the trinity.
i can even say that i don't accept the trinity, or literal hellfire, etc., and will still be accepted.. where the difference is, if i try to join that specific church as an official member with voting rights on church business, or hold an office of deacon, elder, or pastor, then a christian church will often require acceptance of the trinity for membership ... but not for salvation.
Seven times Jesus directly identifies Himself as Yahweh.
You fundamentalist Protestants are so pathetic. It won't do you bad to read other books besides the Bible and the Phonebook.

i don't feel like i am a mindless robot and i resent the implication.. most jws try their sincere best when it comes to practising godly devotion, but isn't the 1000 yr. reign supposed to unroot all our bad tendencies?.
here in new york and across the usa racial tensions between 'blacks and whites' are very strong.
for some of that to spill into our brotherhood is natural.

i moved to my current location, a house in a quiet, friendly, family-oriented neighborhood, in july of this year.
i've been here five months.
i'm usually home on saturday mornings and sunday afternoons.
I moved to Zurich's jewish neighborhood on September and I haven't seen a single Witness around. Actually I wonder if there are JW at all in this smart country.
